Wales aiming for World Cup qualifying winning run - Hughes

Elise Hughes says Wales will aim to win every remaining game in their Women's World Cup qualifying group after they salvaged a draw against the Czech Republic.

Hughes came off the bench to head in a 93rd-minute equaliser as Wales drew 2-2 in their opening game on the road to the 2027 World Cup in Brazil.

Rhian Wilkinson's team were short of their best in Uherske Hradiste but dug deep to claim a potentially vital point in Group B1.

Wales and the Czechs are expected to compete for top spot, with both nations now facing two winnable games against both Montenegro and Albania before they do battle again in Cardiff in the final group game in June.

Rhian Wilkinson's team will look to get their first victory on the board when they take on Montenegro in Llanelli on Saturday (16:30 GMT).

"There's no excuses for us not try to win every game in this group and we'll go home, reset and look forward to playing at home again," said Charlton Athletic striker Hughes.

"We're looking to put things right and get three points and then end this camp on a high."

There is no automatic World Cup qualification route available to Wales because they are not in League A, meaning Wilkinson's side may have to come through three play-off ties to book a place in Brazil.

Finishing top of the group would be significant because it would ensure Wales' first-round play-off would be against a side who finish second or third in a League B pool.

If they come second or third, they would face a team who finish in fourth place in League A or a Group B winner.

Wales have the advantage in the race to finish top having avoided defeat away from home against the Czechs.

"We've mentioned obviously coming away to places like this is going to be tough to leave with a loss," Hughes added.

"It would have been really disappointing. Obviously we wanted the win but it didn't come and the way the game went we'll take the point and go home."
